The helicoil thread insert assembly consists of three critical elements:
1. Coil body - Precision-formed wire thread conforming to ISO 8854 standards2. Installation tang - Temporary handling protrusion
3. Break notch - Engineered shear point with controlled fracture geometry
Tang Removal Procedure
Utilize certified tang removal tools (e.g., STI Tooling System) to eliminate residual installation protrusions:
Insert removal punch at 0° alignment with thread axis
Apply controlled impact using 16oz ball-peen hammer
Shear tang at break notch with ≤3 ft-lbs impact energy (verify per tool manufacturer specs)
Post-Installation Quality Verification:
Remove fractured tang using magnetic retrieval tool
Verify:
Full retention of final coil in parent material thread root
0.002" max radial deformation at insert end
Surface finish ≤125 μin Ra at break point
Conduct functional gauge test:
GO thread plug gauge (Class 2B) must pass freely
Corresponding fastener must thread without binding (≤0.25 N·m installation torque variance)
